Paralympic Alpine Skiing
Paralympic alpine skiing is an adaptation of alpine skiing for athletes with a disability. The sport evolved from the efforts of disabled veterans in Germany and Austria during and after the Second World War. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee Sports Committee. The primary equipment used includes outrigger skis, sit-skis, and mono-skis. Laurie Stephens
Laurie Stephens (born March 5, 1984) is an alpine monoskier who has spina bifida. She has won multiple medals for the United States at the Paralympics. She has also had success at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup. Career Laurie Stephens started skiing at age 12 on Loon Mountain in New Hampshire and then began racing 3 years later at age 15 when she became a member of Chris Devlin-Young's New England Disabled Ski Team. Stephens competes in 5 different skiing events which are the Downhill, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G, and Super Combined. She has competed in 4 Paralympic games and 5 world championships. Her debut as a Paralympian was in 2006 and since she has competed in the 2010, 2014, and the 2018 games. Anna Jochemsen
Anna Jochemsen (born March 30, 1985) is a Dutch Paralympic skier who was born in Eswatini. She competed at the Sochi Paralympics in 2014 and carried the closing flag. She also represented the Netherlands at the 2018 Winter Paralympics. Life Jochemsen was born in 1985 in the African city of Manzini and some of her early life was spent in Finland and the USA. One of her legs was not complete when she was born. With her father's support she took to skiing, when she was seven. She had a professional coach and when she was 23 she took part in her first competition. From 2007, she was competing internationally and training for three or four hours for six days out of every seven. She trained at the National Sports Centre Papendal, but the Netherlands is very flat so when she was mountain skiing in the for nearly half of the year she was in other countries. Charlotte Evans MBE (born 29 March 1991) is a British skier, sighted guide and Paralympian. She is from Chatham in Kent, and attended Rochester Grammar School and then MidKent College. She started skiing as a child at the Chatham Ski Centre, a dry ski slope, moving on to snow at the age of 14. Kelly Gallagher (alpine Skier)
Kelly Gallagher MBE (born 18 May 1985), is a retired British skier and the first athlete from Northern Ireland to compete in the Winter Paralympics. Gallagher won Britain's first ever Winter Paralympic gold medal during Sochi 2014. Childhood Kelly was born on 18 May 1985 and was raised in Bangor in the north of County Down. Her father, Patrick Gallagher, was an airline pilot. She is a graduate in mathematics from the University of Bath. Andy Bor (born 14 April 1963) is an Australian former ski coach and sighted guide for visually impaired skiers. He was a coach at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino, and was Melissa Perrine's guide skier at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver and 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi. Bor became Melissa Perrine's guide in 2009. He first skied with her in competition at the IPC North America Cup in Colorado, in 2009, where the pair finished second in the super-G. Melissa Perrine (born 21 February 1988) is a B2 classified visually impaired para-alpine skier from Australia. She has competed at the four Winter Paralympics from 2010 to 2022. At the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, she won three gold, one silver and one bronze medals. At the 2018 Winter Paralympics, she won two bronze medals. A sighted guide is a person who guides a person with blindness or vision impairment. Sports Paralympic Games At the Paralympic Games there are various classifications of athletes with a visual impairment. Rules are according to the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The sighted guides are such a close and essential part of the competition, that the athlete with a visual impairment and the guide are considered a team, and both athletes are medal candidates.
